This Graphing Guided Math Unit combines measurement-related concepts with data interpretation and analysis to get your 4th graders thinking about how information about the world around them is displayed. Mini-Unit 1 focuses on Common Core Standards and Mini-Unit 2 is dedicated to TEKs. You will find everything you need for graphing right here!
4th Grade Unit 5 Mini-Units
Mini-Unit 1: Graphing Data on Line Plots
Mini-Unit 1 uses whole numbers to introduce important line plot details like range and intervals. Students will learn how to make and work with frequency tables as the most efficient way to organize data.
Instruction then moves to working with fraction intervals, while still following the important steps of analyzing minimum and maximum values, x-axis range, and representing number intervals even if they have no data.
Lesson 3 provides pre-made line plots for students to answer questions that require they interpret data correctly. Mini-Unit one covers the Common Core Standards for graphing in the Measurement & Data domain.
Mini-Unit 2: Histograms and Stem and Leaf Plots
Mini-Unit 2 builds on the line plot skills covered in Mini-Unit 1. Sometimes data sets have a wide range or too many data points and don’t work for display on a line plot. Mini-Unit 2 teaches students how to build stem & leaf plots, while also incorporating decimals as well as fractions.
Histograms are also introduced as way to display large data sets in frequency classes that won’t work for line plots. Histograms are set up like a cross between a bar graph and a line plot, with continuously numbered x-axes that contain all of the data points in a data set. Both of these graphing methods will build on student understanding of how to graph and how to use graphs.
Lesson 3 concludes the graphing unit by having students work with pre-made graphs to describe what they show and work with the data. The Graphing Unit contains a separate assessment for all of the concepts in the unit for teachers and students working with TEKS.
Digital Guided Math Activities Included!
Each component of the 4th Grade Guided Math Curriculum comes in printable and digital versions to maximize your flexibility teaching these important concepts. YOU can choose which version of each lesson component should be used – and when – for your diverse learners.
Digital lessons teach the content for each graduated step needed to learn about graphing.
Digital Math Mats and Task Cards are also included.
Each lesson includes a Digital Exit Ticket to give you a snapshot of student learning. Exit tickets are such an important formative assessment for your planning process as a teacher. Full-color Digital Practice Pages also use interactive movable digital pieces to allow students to demonstrate their learning in a more independent way.
