Making digital math activities is fun! It’s a great way to save paper, get students comfortable with online testing, and get student engaged!
My digital math centers were created using Google Slides. They have a variety of question types such as sorting, matching, inserting shapes/lines, entering text, and more! But what happens when these interactive elements don’t move?
Let’s look at common mistakes and how to fix them.
My Slides Aren’t Interactive!
The first thing you should check at is how you created the assignment.
Did you select ‘make a copy for each student’ when you attached the Google Slides?
If you leave the settings as students can view file, the moveable items and text boxes will be locked.
If you leave the settings as students can edit, your entire class will be able to edit the same file. This is actually a very neat feature for group assignments.
Summary: Make sure you select ‘make a copy for each student’.
I’m Clicking Presentation Mode and Nothing Moves!
Google Slides will not be interactive in presentation mode. You must use editing mode. So, how do you know if you’re in editing mode?
Once you open Google Slides, you are in editing mode. Simple. 🙂 Do NOT click the Present button.
In editing mode, you are able to view the tool bar and slide thumbnails. All moveable pieces are now interactive.
Summary: Make sure you are using editing mode.
Google Slides are not Interactive on the iPad!
Make sure you have the following apps installed:
- Google Classroom
- Google Slides
Once students open up their assignment, they will have to click the arrow at the top right.
This will open up the Google Slides app. The slides are now interactive! Remember to work in editing mode.
Summary: Work on the assignment using the Google Slides app.
