1. April Fool’s Day Flowers
Do you love a good April Fool’s Day joke? Me too! This activity is all about flowers attempting to fool you. For each equation, there are two flowers whose fractions will make the missing part of the equation true, and one trying to play a trick. Students use what the have learned about fractions to identify the incorrect fractions.
Teacher-Tip for Early Finishers: Challenge students to make up their own problems on the back with two true answers and one false. Exchange papers with a partner and try to stump one another.
3rd Grade:
Find the fraction that doesn’t belong.
• equivalent fractions
•• comparing fractions
4th Grade:
Find the fraction that doesn’t belong.
• equivalent fractions including tenths & hundredths
•• adding like denominators & finding equivalent fractions
5th Grade:
Find the fraction that doesn’t belong.
• adding unlike denominators & finding equivalent fractions
•• subtracting unlike denominators & finding equivalent fractions
2. Gum Ball Math Facts Game
This quick and simple partner game is a great for early finishers, math centers, or to leave with a substitute teacher. Each player has their own gum ball machine. Students take turns rolling the dice, solving math problems, and coloring in the gum balls from their machine. The first player to color all of their gum balls is the winner.
3rd Grade:multiplication facts• x 1-6•• x 4-9
4th Grade:finding factors• numbers with factors 1-6•• numbers with factors 2-12
5th Grade:multiplying decimals• x 0.4 – 2.4 •• x 0.3 – 5.5
3. Showers and Flowers Game
Inspired by Shoots and Ladders, this game is a bit different. One player represents the showers, racing from top to bottom. The other player represents the flowers, racing from the ground up. Players take turns rolling a die and solving the problems on their board. The first player to reach his or her finish line first is the winner.
3rd Grade:
Add and subtract within 1,000
• addition
•• subtraction
4th Grade:
Add and subtract 1,000-100,000
• addition
•• subtraction
5th Grade:
order of operations with parentheses
• solve problems with parentheses
•• insert parentheses to make equations true
4. Spring Squares Measurement Puzzle
Practice measurement skills in a fun and challenging way! In each puzzle, students arrange pieces by matching measurements. Sometimes it seems there may be more than one correct answer, but the puzzle is only complete when all of the pieces match together and can fit in the frame provided.
These puzzles are ideal for centers or to leave with a sub. Consider using this for an independent study packet too!
3rd Grade:
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide measurements
• operations with numbers and units (g, kg, l)
•• operations with words and units (g, kg, l)
4th Grade:
Determine angle types and measures
• angle types (acute, obtuse, right, straight, reflex)
•• angle measures to the nearest 5º using a protractor
5th Grade:
Convert measurements to larger or smaller units
• metric measurements
•• U.S. measurements
5. Egg Hunt Cootie Catcher
This is one ‘punny’ bunny search! First, students fill in the blanks to make fraction equations true. Then, they cut and fold to make a cootie catcher. When students play with a friend, they are on the hunt for a bunny and its egg. Along the way, they will meet lots of silly characters with puns that will bring chuckles, groans, or both.
3rd Grade:
Fraction fill in the blanks
• identify fractions
•• generate equivalent fractions
4th Grade:
Fraction fill in the blanks
• generate equivalent fractions
•• add/subtract like denominators
5th Grade:
Fraction fill in the blanks
• generate equivalent fractions
•• add/subtract unlike denominators
6. Baby Animal Bar Graphs or Line Plots
3rd graders will work with scaled bar graphs where each bar represents a certain number of baby animals. 4th and 5th graders will work with line plots. All activities give students word problems to answer using the information presented in the bar graphs or line plots.
In the higher level for 4th and 5th grades, students use data from a table to make the line plots before answering questions.
3rd Grade:
Scaled Bar Graph
• 1-2 step problems
•• multiple step problems
4th Grade:
Line Plot with fractional measurement
• 1-2 step problems
•• complete the line plot with given data & multiple step problems
5th Grade:
Line Plot with fractional measurement
• 1-2 step problems
•• complete the line plot with given data & multiple step problems
7. Word Problem Eggs in a Basket
This activity is a low-stakes way to practice word problems. First students read the word problems. Lines are drawn from each word problem to its corresponding equation in a basket. Each of the equations uses the unknown as a letter variable to give students exposure to and practice with using variables in mathematical equations. Last, students solve the equations and sort eggs cut out from the bottom of the page into the correct baskets.
If you have students who are struggling, this is a great way to include students who might be reluctant or unsure how to begin solving a complex word problem.
Teacher-Tip: Follow up this activity with a discussion on how students chose the correct equation. For students who need a challenge, invite them to write a different equation that would produce the same answer.
3rd Grade:
Match word problems with equations, then sort answers
• addition & subtraction
•• all operations
4th Grade:
Match word problems with equations, then sort answers
• 2 step problems without remainders
•• 2-3 step problems with some remainders
5th Grade:
Match word problems with equations, then sort answers
• all operations with parentheses
•• all operations with parentheses and brackets
8. Earth Day Tri-Fold
April 22 is Earth Day! Instead of 2 separate worksheets, it’s time to save paper with a 2-sided tri-fold packed with 6 different Earth Day mini-activities. First, students will make words from the letters found in “EARTH DAY,” followed by coloring, a word search, a maze, and more!
