4-digit numbers can be written different ways.

Expanded Form | 8,000 + 300 + 10 + 4 |
Unit Form | 8 thousands, 3 hundreds, 1 ten, 4 ones |
To write 4-digit numbers in standard form, put a comma between the digit in the thousands place and the digit in the hundreds place.
The comma makes it easier to read, write, and remember the number.
To write a 4-digit number in word form, spell out the number and value in each place. The tens and ones place together make a 2-digit number.
Expanded form is writing the value of each place separately. Numbers in expanded form are written with a plus sign between the value of each place.
Unit form is writing the digit in each place with the name of the place. Numbers in unit form are written with a comma between each place.
