Multi-digit numbers can be written in many ways!
Expanded form separates each digit and represents it with its full value. The numbers are separated by plus signs because each number added together will equal the original number.
For example, 846,135 in expanded form is:
800,000 + 40,000 + 6,000 + 100 + 30 + 5
A 7-digit number will have 7 addends in expanded form.
6,119,452 would be represented as:
If you stack numbers in expanded form vertically, they make a giant addition equation.
Adding the value of each digit vertically is a good way to check your expanded form! The sum should equal the original number.
