Discussions
We constantly tell students to show their work or explain their thinking. Using math sorts weekly will give students practice in putting their thinking into words. Your students will use math vocabulary as they explain how they sorted their cards. They will learn from each other as they collaborate in groups. You can quickly assess student learning as you listen to their conversations.
Differentiation
In the printable version, I’ve included two versions of each math sort. The first version includes the category labels. This version tells the students how to sort each card. It gives them a starting point to explain how they sorted their cards. The second version requires students to come up with the math vocabulary on their own. There may also be more than one way to sort the cards. An excellent way to extend each math sort is to have students create their own cards for each category.

What Teachers are Saying
“I love these sorts and so do my students. They are great for math stations because my students are engaged and on task using these sorts. These are quick and easy to distribute, explain, and even for students to self-check. They are also organized by CC standard, which is great, but I’m from Texas so we use the TEKS. It is not a big deal to look through and find what works for me. Great product. I highly recommend these sorts.”

My students were begging to complete more of these assignments. It made learning from a distance fun and engaging. I was very satisfied. ”

“This is one of my favorite math centers and students love the sorts, too! It’s so easy to differentiate with the heading options provided. It’s become routine. My math instruction would not be complete without these. I love having students explain their thinking for how they sorted on Flipgrid.”
Alicia V.4th Grade Math Sorts (Printable)
“This resource is perfect for distance learning. It is thorough, well linked to the standards, and engaging for students. Students and parents have commented to me how easy and fun they are to use. What a great product!”
