Many students learn rounding by memorizing a rule like, “5 or more, raise the score.” While that shortcut may help them remember the procedure, it doesn’t always help them understand why a number rounds up or down.
Instead, give students visual models they can use to think about the distance between numbers. A hundreds chart and number line help students develop number sense while building confidence with rounding.
Use a Hundreds Chart to Teach Rounding
A hundreds chart makes it easy for students to identify the two benchmark numbers surrounding the number they are rounding.
For example, when rounding 67 to the nearest ten, students can locate 60 and 70, then decide which benchmark is closer.

A number line gives students another visual strategy for rounding.
After identifying the endpoints, students find the midpoint and plot the number. This encourages them to think about where the number belongs instead of guessing whether to round up or down.
In the example below, 519 is between 500 and 600. Since it is before the midpoint of 550, students can see that it rounds to 500.
