Third grade students begin learning about multiplication by building simple arrays. Students then begin to break apart large arrays into smaller arrays. This helps with understanding the distributive property of multiplication.
Hands-On Math Activity
The following picture shows how you can use ten-frames (affiliate link) to build arrays. Notice how you can flip over the counters to model the two smaller arrays.
This is such an important skill to learn – especially for students who struggle with their multiplication facts. They can use this strategy to solve math facts they haven’t memorized yet.
4 x 7 = (4 x 5) + (4 x 2)
FREE Digital Counters for Building Arrays
Having a small group set of these ten-frames (affiliate link) is ideal, but using a digital version is the next best thing!
I created a free template that you can use with your students as they learn to build arrays and break them part into smaller arrays. Simply fill out the form to get your copy today!
