Teachers are given a curriculum map to follow, but it doesn’t always go as planned. Every student is different and sometimes you have to spend that extra week(s) on fractions or a few more days on elapsed time.
This all sounds like something a good teacher would do.
The problem?
If you are an upper elementary teacher, you know that end of year state testing is coming. You worry you won’t cover every topic, but you don’t want to rush. You want to make sure students understand the math concepts and not just memorize rules.
Sound familiar?
I taught third grade for six years, so I know that it can get very stressful. Well, there’s a solution!
Spiral Review.
I created the morning work I wish I had. One that does the following:
- Reviews math standards from the previous grade
- Spiral reviews ALL current grade level standards
- Previews next year’s grade level standards
- Grades 3-5 include daily cursive and grammar practice
REVIEW
The first few weeks of school are so important. This is when you’re getting to know your students, setting up classroom expectations, learning routines, and so much more.
For these reasons, I wanted to take a few weeks to review math standards from the previous grade. This would give students confidence and gives you more time to complete your morning duties.
By the time students get to math standards for the current grade, they will have built a strong morning routine.
SPIRAL REVIEW
Each week includes questions from a variety of topics. They follow a similar format, but gradually increase in difficulty. This allows for students to again build confidence. You may decide to use the Friday page as a quiz grade.
PREVIEW
The last few weeks include questions that cover next year’s math standards. I make sure to include problems that will help students work on their math fact fluency.
Bonus Items!
I’ve included back-to-school activities for the first week of school. These pages are perfect for the first week of school.
I also included an end of the year book for students to complete!
